Sermon Discussion | John 20:19-23

  • In verse 20:19-20, We pick up the story after Jesus' resurrection revealed to Mary. If you remember she went and told them, but they did not believe he was alive (Mark 16:10-11). Jesus comes to the disciples, who were gathered and afraid of the Jews and says, "Peace be with you". How relieved do you think they were to see Jesus?...Use your imagination, put yourself in that room - how would you feel/react? Shannon points out that Jesus does not bring up the past of their disbelief. What is this "peace" of Jesus initiating? How can we bring this same peace to those around us?

  • Shannon outlined 5 points of their interaction with Jesus...

    1. He gives them assurance (v20) not a new thought or doctrine. His resurrection is proof of all that he said and did. The text says they "Were glad when they saw the Lord". Can you share a time God showed up in your life to bring you peace and gladness?...has someone else in the image of Christ done this on his behalf to you?

    2. He gives them Peace (v21) "Peace be with you". The disciples are raging emotionally inside...the body is gone! They're hiding. Jesus shows up and says, "Peace be with you". This is not just a platitude, he's saying - be calm, find rest, I am here. Who needs to hear this in their life? Think of those around you that would need to hear these words - take a minute to pray their names and how you can be that message for them.

    3. He gives them a mission. We have the role and opportunity to proclaim the good news..the King has come! What does it mean for you personally to claim the good news of Jesus? As an image bearer our mission is to "be" the good news, how can you encourage one another to be the image of God?

    4. He gives the Spirit. (22) He breathes on them and says, "Receive the Holy Spirit". How thankful are you that all you have to do is receive it!? His spirit is a gift of life! Read and reflect on Ephesians 2:1-10 as those who have received the spirit.

    5. He gave them authority. We too have the spirit and the authority to proclaim the good news! We can place our trust in the finished work of Jesus for the forgiveness of sin. Read verse 23, discuss the implications of forgiveness.

  • Jesus' appearance for us is a reminder that we/others are never too far gone. Jesus is interested in a regenerate heart, not religious behavior. Are we/you interested in the same type of conversion for others? What is the difference between the regenerate heart and religious behavior?
