Jesus' Prayer for Glory | John 17:1 -5

Sermon discussion questions | John 17:1-5

1. "After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: "Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you" - John 17:1

Matt started his message by saying that, "God is for God". That the trinity is in mutual submission and glorification of each other. He drew out the idea of glory as being weighty or important; someone or something we should have a good opinion of. What do you think of when you hear the word glory? In your imagination how does the trinity glorify each other? What does it mean for us to glorify or give glory to God?

2. In verse 1 we see Jesus praying, Matt made the comment that if Jesus is in union with God, why does he pray? How would you answer that? How does Jesus model relationship and dependency on the father through his prayer life? What are some ways you can be intentional in prayer? Discuss with your group different ways you pray for yourself, your family, the church etc.

3. John 17:2-3, "For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." What does it mean to know God? How is knowing God connected to eternal life? What is eternal life?...How can we experience eternal life now, not after death?

4. John 17: 4-5, "I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began." Just as Jesus has come to bring the kingdom by displaying what God is like and what life is like in his kingdom which was accomplished through his death - we too have work to do! How does your work bring glory to God? Is "glorifying God" only something that can be done while at church or in religious activity?...why or why not? What does it mean for you to live a kingdom focused life?
