It is Finished | John 19:28-37
Sermon Discussion | John 19:28-37
We are at the foot of the cross. Jesus has been ridiculed and beaten and whipped. Imagine the scene of Jesus hanging there with nails through his wrists and feet. Crucifixion is a form of punishment reserved for only the lowest of the low- second class citizens. Discuss what you see, how you see it and how you feel with Jesus crucified there. Now put yourself in the place of his mother Mary. How different is it for her to be there at the foot of the cross? What does she see, how does she see it, how does she feel?
Pastor Paul mentions the different types of pain that are found at the cross and we are to endure them all because Jesus endured them all, we can't just gloss over the pain and get through it. Talk about each of the pains mentioned; physical pain, spiritual pain, emotional pain. How are these pains experienced for Jesus? How do we experience them in this story?
Verse 30-It Is Finished! The final words of Jesus are hugely significant for us as Christians, ultimately understanding that the last word of Jesus, is the first word for us. What is finished? What are some of the old ideologies that no longer are true? What are the larger things that changed for man that Paul refers to with the death of Jesus on the cross ( ex. Hebrews 10: 9-14)? Talk about the thoughts and truths that changed for you personally with the words "It is finished".
Read Palm 22 and compare it to what is written in John 19. Paul reminds us that there is great comfort in the completeness of scripture- it all fits together. The things foretold in the old testament come true in the new testament. What are other scriptures in the bible that tell about Jesus on the cross, and prophesy about Him dying for His people? Discuss
