1 Timothy 1 | Recognizing False Teaching

Sermon Discussion | 1 Timothy 1

Are you paying special attention to what you're encouraging or correcting in your own heart?

Read 1 Tim 1:1-4. Paul starts this letter by addressing something going on in the church regarding "myths and genealogies", we don't know exactly what this entails. We can however, apply this to our modern day as Jeremy gave the examples of higher knowledge or conspiracy theories. How might these ideas/thoughts be a distraction?...What would you say they are distracting from? If you or someone in your family leans towards this (conspiracy theory etc.) how do you engage with them?

Read vs 5. Paul seems to be making the point that he is not confronting or calling out to make anyone the fool or to be harsh, but because he loves them. It is from a pure heart he desires to confront and be heard from. Can you think of a time that required confrontation, was your goal love?..or embarrassment/shame? Were your words coming from a pure heart?..did you spend time with the Lord having him search you first? Was your position motivated by faith? In the future, how will you handle yourself in the future - in both big and small situations?

Read verses 6-7. Jeremy pointed out that our culture seems to be full of people that "Want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about..." It feels that while social media has made it normative to know of everything and about everything, it is not limited to just those spaces - that way thinking has seeped into all parts of our culture. Have you experienced this? We would expect this in the world, have you experienced this in the church?..or among christians?

Read verses 8-11

What things come to mind when you hear "The law" mentioned? Read Galatians 3:23-25 - reflect on this in light of how the question was answered. What is the purpose of the law? What point is Paul making about the law? How should we respond to verse 9 in our own lives?
