David's Census | 2 Samuel 24:1-25

Sermon Discussion | 2 Samuel‬ ‭24‬:‭1‬-‭25

1. Paul opened with a disclaimer about the way to approach the scriptures. In places that it is plain and clear, we proclaim what is true and good. In places where it is unclear or confusing, we need to approach it with humility. How have you seen people use this approach incorrectly? Have you seen Christians using scripture as a dividing line from other Christians? How does that kind of approach reflect to the unbelieving world?

2. David enacts a census, particularly to count and measure the size, the might, and the power of his army. What do you think the purpose of such a count would be? How does that purpose undermine the role of Israel in the world? What is the main strength of Israel as it exercises its role on the global scene?

3. Paul pointed to pride as the main danger, the main sin, that this census brings about in David’s life? What are the ways you see your neighbors measuring their “army”? How does that kind of measurement effect the way they live and order their lives? What are the things that you are tempted to measure in your life?

4. Gad, the prophet, brings to David the options of how God will bring judgement to the people? The difficulty is that God is going to bring judgement on a people who were not responsible for the act. How do you personally wrestle with the tension of God’s sovereign right to judge and guide and oversee with the fact that sometimes, from our experience and perspective, it seems unfair?

5. “Pride makes you forget the provision of God.” How have you seen this play out in the world around you? How have you seen this work itself out on your own life? In your experience, what have been the most effective tools in your faith to combat against pride?

6. Although it is tempting to view this as being completely about David, but the judgement is actually directed at Israel. The chapter begins by describing God’s frustration and anger at Israel. They have become like the nations that surround them? What are the personality traits of the nation of Israel when they are looking like their neighbors? How do we protect ourselves from falling into these same habits as the church? How do you keep check in your own life for this?
