Advent: Joy

Sermon Discussion | Advent: Joy

1. Jeremy opened his sermon asking, "What is the difference between joy and happiness? Can joy be more than something other than a cliche? Is joy something you can seek and find?" discuss with your group how you would answer those questions.

2. Joy is a time traveler. We know the future holds the return of Jesus as king, if we were to *really* live into this reality today, how would you change what you're doing now? What are things you would pursue? What things would you worry less about?

3. Joy is a student of the master. Jeremy made the point that joy is found when we are close to our master, that we should draw near to Jesus during times of hardship or suffering. Read Matthew 5:3-12, what does it mean to be blessed? As you read the descriptions (mourn, meek, merciful etc) are there people who come to mind that you feel live in this way? How are you pursuing a blessed life?

4. Joy is a spark of rebellion. Ephesians 6:12 says "Our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." Beware who your enemy really is. Have you/do you consider this verse when in conflict with others? How could it reframe your thinking? Col 2 says Jesus has overcome through suffering! In what ways can we follow Jesus' example? What spiritual rhythms can you practice to strengthen your faith? Discuss our weapons of warfare are love, joy, hope and peace.
